Trekking in Elba Island
"ISOLATION", between mountains and sea
Text by the Agenzia Turismo per lArcipelago
Toscano
As legend would have it, the Tuscan
archipelago originates from a broken necklace
said to be that of the Greek god of beauty and
love, Venus, the fell into the waters of the
Tyrrhenian sea. The nature and history of Italys
third largest island have combined over the
years to produce an extraordinary quality of
atmosphere and culture.

Travelling for only few kilometres
by foot, one can leave the seaside and reach the
hillside. One can visit the remains of an Etruscan
fortress before diving into the sea from a small
beach where maybe, at few hundred metres may be
a rock once used by the ancient Romans as a bridge
some 2000 years ago.
On
no other Mediterranean island will one find a
granite mountain over 1000 metres high only 2
hours walking distance away from one of the most
interesting mining zones in the world.
Who visits Elba for the first time will find the
varied scenery at the turn of each bend, amazing.
Elbas complex geologic nature has effected
all that is Elba today but to discover Elbas
most authentic natural history one must look beyond
the islands obvious touristic side. The
best way to achieve this is to visit Elba by foot.
Trekking signifies becoming part
of ones surroundings. On Elba, an excursion of
only a few kilometres, provided one takes time
to listen and observe, will provide endless discoveries.
We suggest trekkers to visit the
island in the more peaceful months during Autumn,
Spring and winter where one will discover microcosms
based on delicate balances; historic, cultural
and natural values almost forgotten.
ELBA BY FOOT
We are sure that the excursions we are
about to suggest, between sea and sky, will not
only be a learning opportunity, but a motive for
personal growth in this, one of the most impressive
places in the Mediterranean.
THE ITINERARIES
The itineraries suggested are suitable
for even first time trekkers.
However, considering the nature and the location
of these pathways and the situations that even
the most careful trekkers may find thmselves in,
we advise trekkers, above all in spring and summer,
to carry all suitable equipment.
Who desides to walk along the paths
and tracks of Elba is no doubt expressing a desire
to return to nature. These excursions are an effective
medicine to combat all ailments of modern living.
We must however allow the future generations to
enjoy this nature; the behavior of some will slowly
destroy the natural environment.

We take this opportunity to give
you some useful tips:
- Enjoy the native flora but
dont collect the plants and flowers;
- For no reason light fires;
- Dispose of all litter in
waste containers; if there are none located
nearby, take your rubbish with you;
- Only use pathways and tracks
marked on maps;
- Do not damage trees or bushes;
- Do not disturb wildlife or
their young;
- Do not disturb the peace
and quite of the woods .The silence and tranquillity
of nature is public property;
- Respect all rules and regulations
as ordered by the local council;
- Cars and motorcycles must
be left parked in the designated parking areas
and must not travel along pathways and tracks.
In light of Elbas archaeoligical
wealth and unique scenery and nature, various
types of accommodation are available offering
tourist the possibility to enjoy the Islands
beauty.
Throughout the year various events are organised,based
on naturalistic, archaeological and ditactic themes.
